I did 5 days in Leon, Nicaragua for $140 total. That's $28/day all-in.
Everyone talks about Costa Rica, but if you want the real Central American backpacker experience without going broke, Nicaragua is the move right now. Leon is cheaper than Granada, less touristy, and the street food scene is insane. Here's every dollar I spent.
Daily Budget Breakdown
| Category | Cost/Day |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | $10 |
| Food | $10 |
| Transportation | $3 |
| Activities | $5 |
| Misc | $0 |
| TOTAL | $28/day |
The Breakdown
ACCOMMODATION: $10/day
Poco a Poco Hostel — $10/night for a 10-bed dorm. 9.5 rating on Hostelworld and easily one of the best hostels in Central America. The building is a 200-year-old colonial mansion with a lush courtyard, a pool, and great Wi-Fi.
Alternative: Hostal El Albergue if you want something even cheaper, but honestly, Poco a Poco is worth the $10.
FOOD: $10/day
Street food is the move here. Restaurants near the cathedral will easily double your budget, but eating like a local is cheap and way better anyway.
- Breakfast: $2 (Gallo pinto and eggs at the market)
- Lunch: $3 (Quesillos or street tacos)
- Dinner: $4 (Fritanga plates from street vendors — usually grilled meat, plantains, and cabbage salad)
- Snacks/Drinks: $1
TRANSPORTATION: $3/day
Leon is super walkable. The colonial center is compact. You only need to pay for transportation if you're taking a taxi back late at night or taking a local bus (chicken bus) to the beach at Las Peñitas, which costs about $1.
ACTIVITIES: $5/day
The famous activity here is Volcano Boarding down Cerro Negro (sliding down an active volcano on a piece of wood). It costs about $30, but over a 5-day trip, that averages out.
Other cheap things:
- Cathedral of Leon roof walk: $3 (insane white domes and city views)
- Free walking tours (just tip the guide $2-3)
The Honest Review
What was great:
The vibe. Leon feels alive. It's a university town with a gritty, revolutionary history, incredible architecture, and prices that actually feel like budget travel. You don't have to stress about money here.
What sucked:
The heat. Leon gets incredibly hot, especially in the afternoon. You'll definitely want a hostel with a pool (again, Poco a Poco comes in clutch). And the chicken buses can get ridiculously crowded if you're heading out of town.
Would I go back?
100%. It’s exactly what budget travel should be.
Total Trip Cost
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Flight (JFK to MGA via MIA) | $285 |
| 5 Days @ $28/day | $140 |
| SIM card | $10 |
| Travel insurance | $25 |
| GRAND TOTAL | $460 |
How to Book This Trip
- Flights: Book a flight to Managua (MGA). Avianca and American Airlines usually have the best deals from the US, often under $300 round-trip if you book 4-6 weeks out.
- Getting to Leon: Take a shuttle or public bus straight from the MGA airport to Leon. It takes about 2 hours.
- Accommodation: Book Poco a Poco on Hostelworld, but check their direct site too.
Go. Seriously. You can afford this.
